Nottingham Rugby are pleased to announce their first re-signing for the 2017/18 season, with back rower Shane Buckley signing a new, one-year deal at The Bay.

The 24 year-old Irishman joined the Green and Whites from PRO 12 side Munster last May, and has impressed for Ian Costello’s side this season, scoring 3 tries in 17 league and cup appearances so far.

The imposing, former Ireland Under-20 number eight is the first of many to commit his future to Nottingham for at least another year, with head coach Costello currently very happy with how his squad is shaping up for the next Greene King IPA Championship campaign, saying:

“We’ve managed to retain a high percentage of the current squad and our aim would be to add some quality around that as well. We’re backing the players we have and the environment we have, to bring us the most success going forward. We feel we have a particularly good group of players in terms of their character, ability and room to grow and improve.”

Going on to talk about the importance of having Buckley’s presence on the field for next season, Costello added:

“Shane came in with quite a bit of experience form Ireland and has adapted really quickly to the league and has developed his game while he’s been here. He’s been a real physical presence for us.

“He’s the quiet type of leader in the group and sets a lot of standards. He’s a very important piece of the jigsaw, so we’re delighted that he’s going to continue to grow and improve here, and influence the young squad he has around him.”

Buckley will join teammates Jimmy Stevens, Ben Hooper, Tom Holmes, Ben Morris, Vili Hakalo and captain Matt Everard at Lady Bay next season, who are all halfway through their two-year deals at the club.
