Cobden returns for Nottingham Rugby to face Richmond

Nottingham Rugby centre Joe Cobden is set for his first appearance of the season, as Richmond visit Lady Bay on Sunday, in the third round of games in Pool 4 of the British & Irish Cup (3pm kick-off).

The highly-rated, 25 year-old back has been plagued with injury problems in recent seasons, before suffering another set-back during the summer, which has kept him out of league and cup action for the his side’s whole campaign so far.

Also making a welcome return is fly half Lawrence Rayner, who hasn’t featured since October, after picking up a knock in the Green and Whites’ away trip to Doncaster Knights.

Number eight Josh Poullet has also been handed the captaincy for the first time in his Nottingham career.

Three players named amongst the replacements are all likely to make their Nottingham debuts on Sunday, with Nottingham Trent University students Tim Cardall and Alex Goble both given the nod by head coach Ian Costello, whilst Sam Olver, son of former England hooker, John Olver, has been brought in on a dual-registered deal from Northampton Saints. The 22-year old fly half will provide more options in an area where injuries have proved to be a major headache for Costello and his coaching team this season.

Nottingham currently sit in third place in Pool 4 of the cross-border competition, losing their opening game to Scarlets Premiership Select, before securing a famous win over Leinster ‘A’ in Dublin, leaving them level on points with the second-placed Irish side.

The two teams have met once already this season, with the Green and White securing a 20-8 win, in the Championship, back in October. Tries from Ben Brownlie, Murray McConnell and James Stephenson helped Nottingham to a home victory over the Championship’s current bottom side.
