After winning their group in a qualifying festival at Mellish, and then winning both their quarter and semi final games at Welford Road in November, Nottingham Corsairs U10’s were back at Welford Road for the Tigers Prima Cup Final against Stamford on 15th April – before Tigers played Newcastle.
The game was dominated by strong defences on both teams with some exceptional tackling and work at the breakdown – chances were few and far between.
Corsairs eventually created a good opening half way through the first half and the ball was carried well down the right wing. It looked as though a tackle just short of the try line had prevented the score but the player wasn’t held and managed to regain his feet and score the games first try.
The 2nd half was also close with Corsairs unlucky not to score a second try after a couple of surging runs.
As the game drew to a close Corsairs made tackle after tackle until Stamford moved the ball quickly to their left wing, who was in some space, and he went over to score in the corner with the last play of the game. With the scores level Corsairs and Stamford were declared joint winners of the Prima Cup!
Both teams were presented with trophies on the pitch by Tigers player Jono Kitto in front of a crowd of more than 23,000 at half time in the Tigers V Newcastle game.
The Prima Cup is open to all clubs at U10’s and is the largest and most prestigious single age group competition in the rugby calendar. It’s only been won once before by a team from Nottinghamshire and that was also a Corsairs team – in 2008.”
