Rushcliffe athlete Louis O’Connor was recently awarded The Peter Hutchinson Trophy for the best male performance at The 2016 English Schools Athletics Championships this year.
The award was presented during the Notts Athletic Club presentation evening which was held at Basford Hall on Saturday 12th November.
Rio Olympic and commonwealth 5000m athlete Laura Whittle was on hand to hand over the award in person and gave a very inspiring speech to the room of young athletes.
Louis, who now studies at Nottingham Trent University, became the fastest under 20 400m athlete in the East Midlands this season and the county champion.
With a change of coach, he now plans to compete in a season of 200m races in order to build on his speed. His first competitive competition at this distance with be at The British University Indoor Athletics Championships in February 2017.
These will be held at The English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. This has been a change to his initial plans for the new season due to reasons outside of his control.
However, he still feels excited by a solid winter training period and the challenge of a change in discipline.
Louis is also training to be a track event official for England Athletics, and is currently working on getting the hours covered that he needs to work through the grades. This is another aspect of the sport which will give him the opportunity to build on confidence and travel around the country.
