More than 80 architecture students from Nottingham Trent University visited a luxury apartment construction site in Nottingham city centre for a ‘sneak peek’ and to gain some hands-on experience as part of their course.

Hounds Gate Court, located on Hounds Gate, Nottingham, is currently being completely renovated by leading Nottingham developer BSP Holdings. The building has a total footprint of 30,000 sq ft and covers four floors. Previously used as office space, the site is being converted into 43 one and two bed apartments.

The interior architecture and design students had the opportunity to tour the site and experience the reality of construction after architecture plans have been drawn. The apartments are due to be completed in phases with the first phase due to complete in August 2017.

Richard Singh, director at BSP, said: “This was a great opportunity for the students to interact with the site staff as our site manager explained the construction methods and onsite procedures.

“The building is a really interesting site full of dynamic shapes and challenges that will provide a mixture of classic and stylish apartments in the heart of the city centre. It was great to see the students interacting with the space and developing a new practical understanding.”

David Boden, of architects Boden Associates, delivered the plans for the new residential site and also teaches on the technical studies module at NTU. He said: “The chance for the students, many of whom have never been on a construction site before, to understand how their designs will translate from concept to construction is fantastic for their development. As part of the course, they have been learning about this sort of development and the opportunity to engage with these aspects onsite was brilliant.

“BSP offered very detailed discussion regarding the details of the project and the challenges of construction.”

Ali Dumas, a fourth year NTU student, said: “I have never been on site before so it was really interesting to get some first hand experience. The phasing of the project was particularly interesting to see and there were lots of aspects that will form part of our final major project.”

The high specification apartments range from 460 – 850 sq ft with eight one bed apartments and 35 two bed apartments with prices starting at £99,950. There will also be 17 private underground parking spaces. The show apartments will be ready to view from April 2017.
