Eyewitnesses said that the fire developed very quickly, eight crews were on the scene at around 7 am today ( January 12 ). Live video from the scene.
Police officers told us at 09:02 am that the fire is now under control.
Major disruption has been reported around the station building and across the city centre as trams, traffic and buses are all affected.
Nottinghamshire Police have told people to avoid the area and advised that no trains will be running today.
No one is reported to have been injured said police.
Cordons are still in place as commuters still approach the station unable to pass through.
Queens Road, Carrington Street, Station Street are all closed to traffic.
Thick black smoke poured from the roof off the building for over an hour as crews began tackling the blaze. Smoke could be seen coming from the Queens Road entrance, between the car park and British Transport Police building.
Fire crews with aerial ladders were above that area of the station building.
Through the glass doors a large amount of smoke could also be seen, much of it coming out through gaps in the building.
