14-year-old arrested on suspicion of arson after former Nottinghamshire school fire

Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a large blaze at a former school building.

Emergency services attended The Old Piano School, in Appleton Gate, Newark, on Wednesday (18 May 2022) evening following reports that it was on fire.

There were no reported injuries, although it did result in significant damage being caused to the building.

A 14-year-old girl has since been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

She has been released under investigation.

Detective Inspector Nicholas Hall, of Nottinghamshire Police said: “This was an incredibly dangerous incident that mercifully didn’t result in anyone being injured.

“The impact of fires such as this can be absolutely devastating and can put people in the surrounding area at serious risk of harm, while also damaging people’s livelihoods.

“As a force, we will always thoroughly investigate all reports of arson, so that we can keep people in our communities safe.

“We have now arrested a suspect in connection with this incident but our enquires are still ongoing, so we’d ask that anyone who has any information that could assist us with our investigation gets in touch immediately.”
