15-year-old sexual assault victim records offender on her phone after Maid Marion Way incident

A man who sexually assaulted a teenage girl was caught after his quick-thinking victim recorded him on her mobile phone.

Anthony Parnell, aged 52, approached his 15-year-old victim as she sat on a bench in Maid Marian Way, Nottingham city centre, on the evening of Tuesday 20 July.

After attempting to strike up a conversation, Parnell, of no fixed address, stood beside her and assaulted her with his hand.

He was arrested around 15 minutes later after his victim passed a detailed description to police officers.

Parnell, who said he had been drinking heavily before the assault, claimed to have no memory of the incident and suggested the video evidence may have been of somebody dressed as him.

However, he later admitted to a charge of sexual assault.

Appearing at Nottingham Crown Court yesterday (Thursday) he was jailed for four months.

He was also added to the sex offenders’ register for seven years.

Detective Sergeant Lloyd Goucher, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Parnell subjected his victim to an appalling ordeal that I am sure she will remember for a very long time. His disgraceful actions that day have rightly earned him a jail sentence which I hope will offer some comfort to his victim.

“Finally, I would like to pay tribute to her courage and quick-thinking in gathering important evidence on her mobile phone which helped us to prove exactly what Parnell had done.”

Parnell was also sentenced for another incident the previous week where he threatened to kill a woman and her children in nearby College Street.

After admitting to a charge of using threatening behaviour with intent he was sentenced to an additional four months in jail.
