16-year-old Nottingham boy charged under Terrorism Act

A 16-year-old boy from Nottingham has been charged with a terrorism offence.

The boy, who cannot be identified due to his age, was arrested by officers from Counter Terrorism Policing East Midlands (CTPEM), on Friday 11 September.

The following day he was charged with engaging in conduct in preparation to commit terrorist acts, contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

The boy, a white Polish national, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday 14 September.

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Steve Shaw from CTPEM said:

“I understand that this arrest and charge may cause concern, but please be reassured we will continue to work with Nottinghamshire Police and partners to act on any information that indicates a potential threat.

“The safety of our communities is our number one priority and public support is vital to our mission to keep people safe. If you hear or see anything that doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and report it in confidence at gov.uk/ACT. You won’t be wasting our time. In an emergency, always call 999.”
