182,00 hot cross buns and cakes sell at Birds Bakery in the lead up to Easter Sunday

182,000 hot cross buns and sweet treats were made and sold by East Midlands-based Birds Bakery in the lead up to Easter Sunday.

March and April saw 122,000 hot cross buns, 36,000 Easter cupcakes, 14,000 gingerbread rabbits and 10,000 chocolate lollies, distributed and sold from the bakeries 62 shops, in order to provide consumers with a savoury or sweet treat during the Easter period.

Famous for its cream cakes, freshly baked bread and pork pies, Birds worked around-the-clock to meet the demand as production increased in April.

Mike Holling, sales and marketing director at Birds Bakery, said: Easter is always a busy time of the year for Birds and with the rule of six now back, everyone was in search of treats and snacks for their first outdoor family buffet of the year.

“Our teams were working extremely hard to provide and deliver hot cross buns and baked goods to people across the East Midlands, in time for Easter, and we hope that we brought some joy to people’s dinner tables.

The bakery’s home delivery service also saw an increase last week, with Thursday and Friday slots selling out and Saturday orders increasing by 100%.

Mike added: “Despite the challenges of lockdown and restrictions still in place for people looking to meet up, our home delivery service performed above our expectations. We extended our product lines this year and with the lovely bank holiday weather, more people were able to celebrate and share a hot cross bun in the garden.

“Due to the success of our home delivery packs we’ve introduced a “make your own” sausage cob, which comes complete with sausages, stuffing, apple sauce and our traditional bread rolls – we expect to see high a demand for our new packs as we approach the warmer months.”
