£220,000 Nottingham cannabis factory leads to jail sentence

A man has been jailed after the city central neighbourhood policing team uncovered a cannabis farm.

Police attended Patterson Road, Hyson Green, on Friday 9 May, after thermal imaging of the property led them to believe a grow was in the area.

Once they approached the address, a man, now known to be Au Hai Tran, was spotted through the upstairs window trying to stay out of sight and repeatedly ignoring officers’ requests to open the door.

They then searched the outside of the property, where they found remnants of cannabis leaves.

This prompted officers to force entry, and they discovered 221 cannabis plants growing across three rooms.

Tran was nowhere to be seen, however.

The 33-year-old’s hiding abilities were soon thwarted by the team, though, as they found him attempting to evade arrest by hiding in the property’s loft behind the plasterboard.

Tran was then arrested under suspicion of producing Class B drugs.

Tran, of no fixed address, went on to plead guilty to the production of cannabis and was jailed for one year when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday 30 May, and is liable for deportation when the sentence ends.

PC Jordan Hinds, lead investigator of the case, said:

“Cannabis production can be linked to violent crime and exploitation of the most vulnerable in our communities.

“Getting illegal drugs off the streets is a major priority for the city central area, and we are as committed as ever to pursuing those involved in their production and distribution.

“If you suspect anyone in your community is involved in the production of cannabis then please report it to us on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
