Police uncovered a house packed to the brim full of cannabis while responding to a separate report at the property.
Officers attended Marlborough Street, Dunkirk, at around 10.15 pm on Sunday (19 February) to find the house’s backdoor wide open.
After being greeted by the strong smell of cannabis coming from within, response officers went inside the three-floored property to investigate further.
Sure enough, they immediately discovered around 50 plants growing inside the dining room, along with growing equipment in the living room.
Around 100 more plants were then found across two rooms upstairs, with a bedroom on the top floor also found to be housing about 50 plants.
As if that wasn’t enough, cops also then uncovered a basement that was filled with approximately 70 cannabis plants.
In total, the cannabis haul seized amounted to more than 300 plants across three separate floors and the basement.
All the drugs and growing equipment have since been removed from the property by police.
As the discovery was being made, officers detained two men nearby who intelligence suggested could be linked to the grow.
The two men, aged 26 and 31, were both arrested on suspicion of the cultivation of cannabis, driving without a licence and driving without insurance.
Inspector Ben Lawrence, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We are pleased to have been able to shut down this illicit operation before it could cause any harm.
“Cannabis was found growing across three floors and a basement all within the walls of this property, which provided an undoubted fire risk when you consider how it was being powered.
“There is a common misconception that growing cannabis is a victimless crime, but this really isn’t the case, as it puts people in the surrounding area in unnecessary danger.
“This was a great result that all in all enabled us to seize and destroy around 300 plants, as well as the equipment used to grow them.
“We have also arrested two suspects, but our inquiries are still ongoing into this incident, so we’d ask anyone with information to call the police on 101, quoting incident 769 of 19 February 2023.”
