Officers discovered a cannabis farm while visiting a bungalow to make an arrest.
Police attended Selston Drive, Wollaton, around 12.50pm on Sunday (12 July), to arrest someone for an unrelated offence.
There was no indication at that stage that hundreds of cannabis plants were on the other side of the door they’d knocked on.
Despite it being clear someone was inside the address, nobody answered, with the waiting officers’ suspicions heightened further when an individual suddenly sprinted out through the backdoor.
Having stopped and detained the suspect, police then went inside the bungalow and immediately realised it was being used as a base to cultivate cannabis.
Nearly 300 cannabis plants were discovered in four separate growing areas – two of which were up in the loft – while a fifth space was in the process of being converted into a growing area too.
The electrics were found to have been bypassed to power the grows as well.
All the drugs and associated growing equipment were duly seized and put out of use by police, who subsequently arrested the 26-year-old man they’d detained on suspicion of cultivating Class B drugs.
PC Jak Walker, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“It is always great news whenever we’re able to tackle drug activity – including the shutting down of cannabis grows like this one.
“Cannabis production is not a victimless crime but instead relies on the exploitation of vulnerable people, has links to wider offending, and also poses a fire risk to neighbouring homes.
“We clearly don’t want our communities to be impacted in this manner, so it was good to be able to seize these drugs – nearly 300 cannabis plants – and arrest a suspect who tried and failed to flee from the bungalow.”
