Currys plc, the UK’s largest omnichannel technology retailer, has today announced a campaign to recruit 500 temporary warehouse operatives at its National Distribution Centre in Newark, in collaboration with its partner GXO, the world’s largest pure-play contract logistics provider.
- Currys seeking top talent to help customers continue to enjoy amazing tech this festive season
- 500 jobs available at its Newark distribution centre, which is run in collaboration with GXO
- Recruitment drive comes two months into Currys and GXO’s strategic partnership, which aims to optimise Currys’ warehouse operations
- Increasing the hourly rate of pay between October and December, to at least £10.50 per hour for all colleagues, rising to £11.50 per hour for Forklift truck drivers (FLTs)
- Increasing the overtime rate of pay to double pay (previously 1.5 times)
- Introducing a retention bonus of up to £1,000 for all warehouse colleagues old and new, split between December and January payments (so everyone will receive a payment in time for Christmas)
- All in all, colleagues could see themselves earning up to £850 per week
The joint recruitment campaign comes two months after Currys appointed GXO to operate four of its 22 distribution sites in the UK. Under the agreement, GXO will manage Currys’ omnichannel fulfilment and returns logistics.
Currys always relies on temporary colleagues to bolster its core population of warehouse operatives ahead of and during the busy festive season, and this season is no different as tech continues to play an increasingly important role in people’s lives.
That’s why, in a bid to recruit top local talent to help the business fulfil millions of orders of amazing tech this festive season, Currys and GXO are now offering new colleagues a number of competitive sign-on and retention incentives. This includes:
- Increasing the hourly rate of pay between October and December, to at least £10.50 per hour for all colleagues, rising to £11.50 per hour for Forklift truck drivers (FLTs)
- Increasing the overtime rate of pay to double pay (previously 1.5 times)
- Introducing a retention bonus of up to £1,000 for all warehouse colleagues old and new, split between December and January payments
- All in all, colleagues could see themselves earning up to £850 per week
All roles are based at Currys’ Newark Campus – run in collaboration with GXO – which spans 1.5m sqft, the equivalent of 50 football pitches! Newark is critical to the smooth running of the business’ supply chain, and everyone plays a vital role in helping the nation enjoy amazing technology. As the business’ National Distribution Centre, the majority of all tech bought at currys.co.uk or in-store starts its journey in Newark before making its way across the country and ending up in customers’ hands.
The Campus, which is already home to 2,500 colleagues across warehouse, repairs, recycling and waste management, has a high rate of temp to perm conversion and successful applicants would be joining what colleagues like to dub “a family”.
Commenting on the new strategic partnership gathering momentum in the run up to the festive season, Gavin Williams, Managing Director for the UK and Ireland, GXO, said: “We’re delighted to partner with Currys plc and bring our logistics expertise in consumer technology to their business as they continue to grow. Our highly-skilled team knows how to deliver added value for customers and by working in partnership with Currys, we look forward to delighting consumers from purchase to delivery.”
Simon Boss, Director of Logistics at Currys, said: “Our Newark campus – run with the unique expertise of our partners at GXO – is the beating heart of Currys. It’s where we pick, pack and dispatch orders for all stores and online customers across the UK&I. It’s hard to imagine a more exciting place to be in the run up to the festive season, as the nation gears up to treat themselves to vital tech that helps them stay connected, productive, healthy and entertained.”
Doina Lazar, Warehouse Operative at GXO/Currys, said: “I have been working at GXO/Currys for four years and for me it is amazing to be able to work flexible hours. You have the opportunity to grow in your career within a helpful and friendly team and with the good news of having a higher salary, which is what people really want. There is also a great opportunity to learn. I would recommend joining the GXO/Currys team to grow in your career.”
