£61.7 million successful bid by council to transform Nottinghamshire towns

Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield will receive a multi-million pound boost thanks to the hard work and vision of Ashfield District Council.

The Government have confirmed that Kirkby and Sutton will receive £61.7million as part of the Government’s ‘Town Fund’ bid.

The money will help them to grow their local economies, while also carving out new opportunities to reshape the look and feel of their areas.

The Deals will help breathe new life into neglected areas or unused buildings by creating vibrant spaces for businesses, community events or much needed new homes.

Today’s announcement means that 79 Towns Deals have now been agreed – totalling over £2 billion investment in communities across England.

The news comes just under 6 months since it was awarded £6.2million as part of its Future High Street fund bid and £1.5million from the accelerated Towns Fund.

Councillor Jason Zadrozny has praised politicians and officers at Ashfield District Council.  He said – it was now ‘…full steam ahead for exciting plans to transform our high streets.”

Councillor Zadrozny, the Ashfield Independent leader of Ashfield District Council said, “This is amazing news for Kirkby and Sutton.

“These plans have taken 2 years to put together and I would like to thank people like Councillor Matthew Relf – who worked tirelessly with Council Officers to put these bids together.

“I’d also like to thank the public for getting behind the biggest consultation we have carried out since the Council was created in 1974.

“This is transformative, this is brilliant and Council staff have played a blinder.  Our bid showed vision, it is innovative and I’m pleased that the Government agrees with us.”

Councils had been asked to put bids together for £25million for both Kirkby and Sutton.  Ashfield District Council upped the ante an ambitious bid for £62million.  A bid that was ultimately successful.

Major projects focussed on skills and business development, new and improved leisure, sports and health facilities and town centre regeneration projects are some of the ways that Ashfield District Council plan to change Sutton-in-Ashfield and Kirkby-in-Ashfield for the better.

Councillor Matthew Relf, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Place, Planning and Regeneration and Ashfield Independent councillor for Sutton Junction and Harlow Wood said:

“This is great news not just for Kirkby and Sutton but also for the whole of Ashfield and the wider area.

“Our ambitious bid includes both projects with a local focus but also a broader regional focus to help Ashfield to become a thriving hub.

“It has been a real team effort.  Our Council Officers have worked so hard to deliver this result that will change our area forever.

“I would like to thank Martin Rigley (who chairs the Discover Ashfield board) and all the local partners on the board who have put so much time and effort into this bid.

“I would also like to thank Ashfield’s MP Lee Anderson for supporting this bid in Parliament.  Finally I would like to thank the thousands of local residents who engaged with us and supported us with this bid.

“This is a victory for them and everyone who had faith in Ashfield District Council for working so hard to deliver this transformational result.”
