Former care workers jailed for abuse of dementia patient

Former care workers were jailed after it was found they had abused a 77-year-old woman suffering with dementia.

Ricky Wheelhouse, 28, and Hayley Burton, 25, were locked up yesterday (Wednesday 4 March) for mistreating an individual under their care.

The court heard that Wheelhouse and Burton had verbally abused Gloria Rowland, who suffered from acute anxiety as well as dementia.

A recording played in court showed that Wheelhouse had interrogated Gloria after he made allegations that she had attempted to hit Burton while visiting Gloria’s home in June 2018.

Wheelhouse of Laxton Road, Egmonton, was jailed for six months. Burton, of Crookes Avenue, Mansfield Woodhouse, was jailed for four months.

Detective Sergeant Hannah Frame, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Gloria was a vulnerable person and what she went through would have put her under immense distress.

“Our team works incredibly hard to protect the most vulnerable people in society and it is through their hard work that we are able to find people responsible for committing disgusting crimes such as this.

“We will always investigate reports of abuse thoroughly. If you have any concerns for a family member or are a victim of abuse, please do not hesitate to contact us on 101 or 999 in an emergency.”

Mrs Rowland has died since the case was brought before the courts.
