Police are reminding people to be vigilant by keeping doors and windows locked after arresting a suspected walk-in burglar.
An investigation was launched after valuables including a bracelet, ring, iPad, and Samsung phone, were stolen by an intruder who entered through the unlocked front door of a property in Holborn Avenue, Sneinton.
Following inquiries, officers arrested a 34-year-old man on Thursday morning (9 October) in connection with the burglary.
Detective Constable Henry James, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Burglary is an extremely upsetting crime so we can’t emphasise enough the importance of making sure your house or flat is secure.
“A lot of burglaries we investigate are committed by offenders entering through home insecurities, be it open windows or unlocked doors, so we’re urging people to be vigilant and take precautions to minimise their chances of becoming a victim of burglary.
“We’d advise people to make sure windows and doors are locked, even if they are only popping out for a few minutes, and to keep valuables out of sight so they can’t be seen by passing members of public or entice opportunistic burglars.”
Inquiries remain ongoing into the burglary which happened on the night of 31 July.
As part of their ongoing work to prevent and reduce burglaries, Nottinghamshire Police officers and community partners have been engaging with residents and students in hotspot burglary areas, giving out helpful crime prevention and personal safety advice.
Advice on how to protect your property, includes:
- Lock your doors and windows every time you leave your household/accommodation
- When you’re away from home use a timer switch to operate the lights to make it appear your property is occupied. Drawing the curtains or closing blinds, preventing people from looking into your home, can also help make a difference
- Keep your valuables, such as jewellery, laptops, phones, and car keys, out of sight and locked away in secured storage boxes where possible
- Remove keys from locks and keep them out of reach and out of sight from windows. Ensure that all keys are kept away from the letterbox and that your house and keys are secure before you go to bed
- You can register your valuables online for free at www.immobilise.com to help improve the chances of being reunited with your valuables if they are stolen
- If you see somebody acting suspiciously report it to the police immediately by calling 101 or, in an emergency, call 999.
