Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) has approved changes to its taxi and driver policy that will help to encourage and retain local drivers and enhance passenger safety.
At RBC’s Full Council on 27 November, updates to its Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Licensing Policy were agreed, with a particular focus on Hackney carriages to improve coverage in rural areas where public transport options remain limited.
The updated policy highlights the authority’s aim for more local drivers, safer vehicles, and stronger safeguarding measures to protect all who use local taxi services.
RBC is also preparing for forthcoming government reviews into taxi and driver licensing, including proposals for mandatory CCTV in all taxis and private hire vehicles.
Ahead of these national reviews, the report recommended that RBC review and consider the introduction of CCTV in Rushcliffe taxis and its own fleet vehicles.
These measures also highlight the Council’s commitment to safeguarding initiatives, aligning with the international White Ribbon campaign to end violence against women and girls.
RBC’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment and Safety, Cllr Rob Inglis, said: “We’re really pleased that councillors supported these changes to our policy, so that we can move forward and progress these safety factors sooner rather than later.
“It will all help to increase the number of Rushcliffe-registered taxi drivers and ensure Rushcliffe residents have access to safe, reliable, and well-regulated taxi services.
“We’re keen to have additional safeguarding measures in place as soon as possible to further protect both drivers and passengers, especially women and girls using taxis.”
