Woman rescued from burning home after life-saving police officers smash way inside

Response officers smashed their way inside a burning property to rescue the occupant, who was trapped inside.

The incident happened just after 9 am on Wednesday 15 April at a property in Marly Bank, Mansfield.

Neighbours contacted us after hearing a loud bang and witnessing smoke coming from an address.

Two response officers arrived within seven minutes of the call coming through and noticed plumes of smoke inside the property.

PC Charlie Shaw smashed through the rear patio doors with a garden slab but realised the smoke was too intense to enter.

PC Adam Munnery then forced open the front door of the address, and PC Shaw entered the property, where he heard cries for help upstairs.

He managed to find a woman in her 60s and pulled her out of the address. The fire had started in the bathroom.

Chief Inspector Paul Hennessy, who is responsible for county response officers, said: “Without the heroic actions of both officers, we could be looking at a very different picture today.

“There is no doubt in my mind the woman would have died or suffered serious injury.
“The property was filled with thick smoke, and the situation was escalating at a rapid speed, where every moment counted.

“The fire also had the potential to spread to neighbouring properties.

“Luckily, response officers are well trained on how to act in these situations, and both officers were able to rescue the woman from the property.

“PC Munnery also travelled with the woman to Kings Mill Hospital to make sure she was okay, as the incident was extremely traumatic.

“This was a joint effort by all officers involved, from passing updates from the scene, to entering a dangerous address to save life, and caring for a vulnerable person.

“The woman remains in hospital in a stable condition, and a full investigation is underway to understand how and why the fire started.”
