Ofsted confirms Porchester Junior School’s Strong rating across the board, showing they are working above expected standards.

‘Pupils show impeccable manners, positive attitudes and confidence. This creates a safe, inclusive environment where everyone feels respected.’ Ofsted 2026

Porchester Junior School in Carlton is celebrating the news that it has met the Strong Standard grade across the board in its latest Ofsted inspection. Ofsted says the Strong rating demonstrates that ‘The school reaches a strong standard. Leaders are working above the standard expected of them’. This is the school’s first inspection under Ofsted’s new framework.

School leaders were praised for being ‘… relentless in removing barriers to learning and ensuring that all pupils can succeed.’

All pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, can access the same curriculum as their peers, said inspectors, and are supported by a robust pastoral system that ensures all needs are monitored and responded to ‘consistently well’.

Vicki Welsby, Headteacher at Porchester Junior School, said, “We are incredibly proud that Ofsted has recognised Porchester as Strong across all areas under the new framework. This report truly reflects what makes our school so special and what it feels like to be a pupil here every single day.

“Our ethos is to be the PRIDE of Porchester, and I am truly proud of our children, staff and wider community. This outcome recognises the hard work, commitment and dedication shown every day to ensuring that children always come first. Most importantly, it shows that our children are happy, feel they belong, and are genuinely known and cared for, while being supported to achieve their very best.”

Attendance is a high priority at the school and is carefully managed by school leaders. Inspectors said, ‘The school is an oasis of calm because expectations of pupils’ conduct are taught clearly, reinforced and understood by all. In lessons, pupils are settled, focused and eager to learn,’ and that, ‘Pupils show impeccable manners, positive attitudes and confidence. This creates a safe, inclusive environment where everyone feels respected.’

The curriculum and teaching are inclusive and led confidently at the school, ensuring that all pupils build strong foundations and achieve well. Teachers are described as confident in their subject knowledge and are able to adapt quickly to provide extra help when pupils require it. Inspectors said that school leaders regularly review teaching and learning ‘to ensure that their high ambitions are lived out consistently’.

Inspectors said that the school works closely with families and effectively uses external professionals to support children, saying, ‘As a result, pupils feel included, safe and able to thrive, both academically and emotionally.’

Staff wellbeing and workload are prioritised at the school, and opportunities for professional learning are found to be an integral aspect of the school’s culture. Leadership and governance were also praised for demonstrating a clear and accurate understanding of the school’s strengths and priorities, with a focus on what matters most for pupils. Inspectors said, ‘There is a sense of teamwork which leads to children thriving.’

Parents and carers told inspectors that leaders are ‘approachable and communicative’, citing purposeful engagement, ‘… especially when additional support is needed.’

The personal development and wellbeing offer at Porchester Junior School ensures children learn about relationships, health, personal responsibility and safety, including online safety, helping children to ‘… stay safe in the world around them, strengthen their character and grow in cultural awareness.’

Pupils told inspectors they ‘feel happy, safe and supported’ and know how to seek help in different ways.

Children are offered leadership roles and wider experiences to build their confidence and resilience and to ‘develop a strong sense of belonging.’ Inspectors said, ‘By the time they reach Year 6, pupils feel well prepared for the next stage of education.’

When reporting on what it is like to be a pupil at the school, inspectors said, ‘Pupils enjoy coming to school and are greeted warmly by staff who know them well. Calm, well-established routines help pupils feel secure and valued. Pupils settle quickly, while those who need additional reassurance are supported thoughtfully so that they are ready to engage.

‘Pupils speak confidently about “Porchester Pride”. They describe this as treating others with respect, showing kindness, and taking pride in their learning and their school. They speak about the school with genuine pride and describe Porchester as “one big family”. Parents and carers are positive about the school’s work. They also feel very much part of the Porchester community.’

Reading is prioritised at the school, and pupils said this approach builds confidence and prepares them well for secondary school. Inspectors said, ‘From their starting points, all pupils make significant progress towards their next steps in learning’ and that children ‘demonstrate genuine empathy and treat others fairly and with respect. Pupils understand equality and equity, which are taught well through the curriculum. They appreciate that fairness means providing different support so that everyone can succeed.’

Finally, inspectors said, ‘At Porchester, everyone belongs. Relationships are affirming and trusting. Classrooms are calm and respectful, and pupils are confident that staff will listen and act if concerns arise.’

Headteacher Vicki Welsby said, “At Porchester, we place a strong focus on building positive relationships, high aspirations and a real sense of belonging for every child, alongside high-quality teaching and learning and a commitment to ensuring every child succeeds. It is wonderful to see this recognised so clearly.

“This result reflects the teamwork across our whole community, and the continuous care and commitment shown to every child, every single day at Porchester.”
