Four years in jail for burglar who stole £10 in loose change

A burglar who fled from a home break-in with just £10 in loose change has been jailed for four years.

Mark Jones was caught rifling through a woman’s home when her daughter went round to the address in Wigman Road, Bilborough, Nottingham.

She spotted her mum’s purse had been moved before hearing a noise in the living room around 10.30am on 9 September 2026.

When she confronted the burglar, later identified as Mark Jones, he claimed to be the victim’s gardener.

After the victim’s daughter blocked his exit, Jones was forced to climb out of the bathroom window before fleeing on a bicycle.

Police were called and located Jones, still on the bike, a short distance away.

Jones, of Moor Road, Nottingham, admitted immediately that he had committed a burglary and stolen £10 after breaking into the house.

He went on to plead guilty to burglary, as well as admitting a separate theft of garden tools.

At Nottingham Crown Court on Thursday (22 October) the 53-year-old was jailed for a total of four years.

Inspector Gordon Fenwick, local area commander for City West, said:

“This break-in has proved extremely costly for Jones who has lost his liberty for the sake of £10 in change.

“Neighbourhood officers worked very quickly to locate and arrest him following the burglary, and we’re grateful for the assistance of both the victim and her daughter.

“Burglary is an invasive and deeply unpleasant crime which can have a significant and lasting impact on any victim.

“That is why we have teams of detectives working on cases like this to ensure burglars are caught and brought to justice.”
