Driver who raced with baby daughter in car sentenced after A52 crash

A driver who raced another car with his eight-month-old daughter in his vehicle before crashing into a Mercedes on the A52 has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Kaylum Ghanie, 21, of Whitechapel Street, Old Basford, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday 3 November.

He received a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, and was banned from driving for 18 months. He must pass an extended driving test before returning to the road and was ordered to pay £150 in costs and a £187 surcharge.

The collision happened at 12.25pm on Sunday 16 November 2025 on the southbound carriageway of Clifton Boulevard, opposite the Showcase Cinema.

Witnesses described Ghanie’s Volkswagen Scirocco undertaking vehicles, swerving in and out of traffic and cutting up other drivers while racing an Audi S3.

Minutes later, he crashed into the back of a Mercedes.

Ghanie told officers at the scene that his baby daughter had been in the car but that someone had already taken her away to go home and then to hospital.

Both front airbags had deployed, and officers noticed a large crack on the front passenger side of the windscreen.

The baby suffered a head injury and was assessed at Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre. Doctors had no concerns about life-altering injuries, police said.

The Mercedes driver told officers she heard a loud noise before being thrown forwards, hitting her face on the steering wheel. She said she was in pain and shock and had blacked out at the roadside.

She later reported difficulty sleeping because of flashbacks and had been prescribed tablets to help. She said she had not driven her car since the collision.

A passenger in the Mercedes attended hospital days later with pain in his legs and was given painkillers.

Ghanie was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged.

PC Joshua Godfrey, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Large parts of this incident were captured on CCTV. Ghanie’s vehicle can clearly be seen racing with another vehicle and it is seen undertaking vehicles and travelling at excess speed in a built-up area.”
