A second eastbound lane will open – but there is a weight limit.
Highways England’s head of the service delivery for East Midlands, Adrian Oulds told The Wire:
“We’re opening a second lane eastbound on the A52 Clifton Bridge.
“Following initial investigation work we’ll impose a weight restriction to manage the type and weight of vehicles using it.
“We need motorists to take note of that restriction so we can have the additional capacity while avoiding causing further damage to the bridge and further restrictions.
“We initially opened the second lane this morning (Friday).
“Safety is the priority and with some drivers ignoring the weight limit we took the decision to close it again temporarily while we install extra signage and lane markings.”

UPDATE.
We are reopening a second lane over #Clifton Bridge in Nottingham for vehicles under 3.5 tonnes .Usage of the lane will be monitored and in the event of heavy vehicles using the lane ,we will have to close the lane again for safety reasons— Highways England (@HighwaysEMIDS) March 13, 2020
‘Following initial investigation work and calculations by our structural engineers this is a precautionary approach to manage the type and weight of vehicles in the second lane.
‘This is based on the extent of the damaged steelwork we’ve found and the analysis work we can complete initially.
“The weight limit is 3 tonnes.
“We’re undertaking more detailed and complex analysis of the bridge which takes longer, but we anticipate will allow us to review the restrictions imposed initially and look to open a further lane when we have determined it’s safe to do so.”
