Armed police officers seized a machete from a car’s footwell following a high-speed pursuit.
The Armed Policing team initially started following the vehicle as it had suspected links to criminality.
Having seen the car in New Basford at around 12.20 am on Friday (7 August), officers turned around and followed it.
A pursuit then commenced as the cars made their way into the Sherwood area, with the driver trying to get away at speed along Perry Road.
The next few minutes saw the car reach speeds of 95 mph while being driven on the wrong side of the carriageway on Valley Road, which has a 40 mph speed limit.
Having hit a kerb while turning onto the A60 Mansfield Road, the car sustained damage to a tyre, with pursuing officers taking advantage of this opportunity to bring it to a safe stop.
Officers then rushed from their vehicles and removed the suspect from the driver’s seat of the car, which was also suspected to have been stolen.
A machete in a sheath was discovered in the footwell of the vehicle when it was searched, while quantities of cannabis were also seized from the suspect.
The 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, possessing an offensive weapon in public, failing to stop and theft of a motor vehicle.
He was also arrested on suspicion of possessing cannabis and driving without a valid licence or insurance.
Inspector Chris Chell, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:
“The skills and patience shown by the officers involved in this incident played a huge role in it being brought to a safe conclusion.
“The speed the suspect vehicle was travelling at – not to mention the standard of driving – was incredibly dangerous and thankfully didn’t result in anyone being injured.
“As I say, that was mainly down to the far superior driving skills of our officers, who did a great job bringing this car to a stop before then recovering a machete that was also found on board.
“It really should go without saying how unacceptable it is to be in possession of such a weapon, so it was pleasing to be able to take that out of harm’s way and arrest a suspect.”
