Armed police stop car and recover stolen phones in Nottingham

Two suspected pickpockets were arrested and a selection of phones recovered during a proactive car stop.

Police pulled the vehicle over in Nuthall Road, Cinderhill, after intelligence work led to suspicions being raised it could be involved in criminality.

The stop happened around 3.20am today (10 October) – shortly after the same car was seen leaving Nottingham city centre.

Officers from multiple Nottinghamshire Police teams combined to great effect to gather the information needed to make the stop.

A bag containing nine mobile phones wrapped in tinfoil was subsequently recovered from the car by the Armed Policing team.

Officers believe the phones were all stolen from the city centre hours earlier, with people on nights out potentially the targets.

Two men, aged 30 and 38, were subsequently arrested on suspicion of theft.

Inspector Paul Gummer, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“After receiving intelligence this vehicle could be involved in criminality, our officers did a great job quickly bringing it to a halt.

“This resulted in nine mobile phones being found on board, which were all wrapped in foil, leading us to believe they were stolen.

“Some great police work went into making this double arrest happen, with several of our policing teams working in tandem to identify the issue and track down this car.

“Officers from each of the CRIM, Priority Tasking, Operational Support and City Centre Neighbourhood Policing teams played a role in securing this positive result.

“We currently suspect these phones were taken from unsuspecting people while they were out in Nottingham city centre last night.

“As a result, we’d urge anyone who lost their phone while they were out in the city centre last night to get in touch with us.”
