Police seized a knife after it was found in the possession of a man outside a nightclub.
A security guard made the discovery as a group of four men tried to enter a venue in The Poultry, in Nottingham city centre, shortly after 2am on Friday (5 November).
The group was refused entry after the blade was found on one of the men during a search.
They left the scene but as they did so one of the men made a threatening gesture at the security guard who had refused them entry.
Police were called and moments later a 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.
Sergeant Janine Barnes, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “The force takes all reports of people suspected to be in possession of weapons on our streets extremely seriously.
“We will always take swift and robust action to protect people from harm and our proactive work to investigate and deter people who think it is OK to carry a knife is ongoing all year round.”
