Arson investigation launched after car set on fire

A shocked man saw his BMW’s windows being smashed before two men on his drive poured accelerant into it before setting it alight.

The victim received a notification on his phone after his CCTV system was activated by movement and saw two men in dark clothing allegedly throwing a box of matches inside the vehicle to start the fire.

The local fire brigade quickly extinguished the flames, but the car suffered extensive damage to the interior.

Police officers searched the area but couldn’t find anyone in connection with the incident.

Detective Sergeant Dave Nicks of Nottinghamshire Police is leading the investigation. He said: “The victim is clearly frightened and we are doing everything we can to establish why this happened.

“Thankfully no one suffered any injuries as this could have been a lot worse.

“Emergency services were called to North Street in Newthorpe at around 9.30pm on Thursday 20 May.

“The two men have been described as wearing dark hooded tops and face masks, before they left the scene.

“The incident must have been hugely upsetting for local residents who witnessed it.

“Officers continue with their CCTV and house-to-house enquiries and upped patrols in the area following the incident to reassure the local community.

“Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service were able to extinguish the flames quickly.

“This crime does cause concern, although it does not appear to be linked to any other incidents in the area.

“If anyone saw anything suspicious or has any information which can help with our enquiries then please call 101, quoting incident number 815 of 20 May 2021.”
