Arson suspect arrested after eight incidents of early morning fires

Neighbourhood officers have arrested a suspect following a series of early morning arson attacks.

Police and the fire service were called to a number of incidents between 3.30am and 8.30am on 8 April in St Ann’s.

Fires were lit deliberately in bins, mattresses, motorcycles, fencing and piles of rubbish in streets including The Wells Road, Warton Avenue, Hendon Rise, Luther Close and Brewsters Road.
Officers were able to link the incidents and arrested a suspect later that day.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of eight counts of arson and has been bailed with strict conditions while investigations continue.

Police Constable Betty Shone, of the City South neighbourhood policing team, said:

“Deliberately lit fires like this are always investigated thoroughly because of the devastating consequences they can result in.

“Fires can spread very quickly to neighbouring properties and put anyone living in the area at risk.

“Thankfully, we don’t believe anyone was harmed during this series of incidents and officers have worked quickly to identify and arrest a suspect.”

Investigations are ongoing and anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting incident 26*199368, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
