Bennerley Viaduct: Work begins on new cycle ramp

Work has now started on a new cycle ramp at Bennerley Viaduct, also known as the ‘Iron Giant’ as part of Kimberley’s £16.5 million Levelling Up Project.

The investment will provide a cycle path along the Eastern side of the Viaduct which will provide a cycle and walking route connecting Derbyshire with Nottinghamshire.

The cycle ramp is the first phase of wider plans for the site, which includes:

  • The creation of an eastern earth ramp at the Viaduct.
  • The creation of a cycle path and pedestrian access on this new ramp.
  • A Visitors Centre which will include educational facilities, a shop, toilets, and a seating area in the summer.
  • Cycle racks.
  • Car Parking facilities for visitors.

John Scruton, Chair of Trustees at the Friends of Bennerley Viaduct saID:

“This is an exciting time for the Viaduct to now have construction work start on the cycle ramp.

“We are so pleased with the improvements of the viaduct so far and are very excited to see the culmination of the plans with the visitor centre and car park completed later this year.

“These much needed improvements, along with the future plans for a visitor centre will make the viaduct a desirable place to visit in the future.”

The project is a joint collaboration between Broxtowe Borough Council, Kimberley Town Council and The Friends of the Bennerley Viaduct.

As well as the improvements to Bennerley Viaduct, the Kimberley Levelling Up Fund includes a town centre improvement project with construction of a new business and community hub, small business grants and lighting equipment for town centre displays to drive visitor footfall, as well as new sports facilities.

Full details of the projects can be found at www.broxtowe.gov.uk/kimberley

The projects have been made possible with support from the Government’s Levelling Up Round 2 funding.
