A community group in Bingham has joined efforts for this year’s Great British Spring Clean in Rushcliffe to make their streets, parks and open spaces sparkle.

Members of Bingham u3a and Cllr Abby Brennan from Rushcliffe Borough Council joined together in the town to further clear the local community of litter with support from the authority’s partners Streetwise Environmental and as part of the national u3a day activities yesterday (Wednesday).

u3a Day is a nationwide event organised to raise public awareness of what u3a groups have to offer within their communities and of the benefits of general health and wellbeing that membership can bring.

The Council is continuing to encourage groups to join the effort that runs nationally until June 13 and volunteer to litter pick in their community for as little or as long as they can give.

All the necessary COVID secure equipment is available from Streetwise by calling 0115 914 8408 or emailing streetwise@streetwiseenvironmental.co.uk.

Cllr Brennan is the Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Communities and Climate Change and met group members and chairman John Lewis at the Buttercross in Bingham to join them in their litter picking mission.

Cllr Brennan said: “It has been brilliant to see so many groups and individuals get involved so far this week and I was delighted to join Bingham u3a for their efforts in the town.

“There is still time for anyone to join the national effort which runs until June 13 so if you are able to arrange a litter pick in your community, please do so.

“We encourage any groups to socially distance in order to maintain safety during any activity and all the advice and support you need is available by emailing media@rushcliffe.gov.uk and we thank you for helping make Rushcliffe a great place.”

John said: “We take pride in our community here in Bingham so it’s great to join the national Great British Spring Clean efforts taking place across Rushcliffe and the country and as part of national u3a day.

“The difference you can make with just a few volunteers is amazing and any efforts, big or small, keep our local spaces looking their best.

“We would like to join Rushcliffe Borough Council in encouraging further groups to get involved to ensure their area of the Borough is tidy and free of litter.”

In addition to the regular clean-up, ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ has launched the #millionmilemission, which aims to clear 1 million miles of waste from the UK, of which over 500,000 miles has already been pledged.
