Bingham to get new 315-place primary school

The green light has been given for a new primary school to be built in Bingham providing up to 315 places for pupils.

The new school will be built on land between Widnall Drive and Drunsmore Road as part of a new residential estate in north west Bingham.

As well as serving primary school-age children, the school will feature a nursery with 26 places available.

The planning application provided for a grass playing pitch, hard-surfaced outdoor play area and a car park for staff and parents.

The single-storey school will also boast a number of sustainable features including high-efficiency lighting, air-source heat pumps and EV car charging points.

Nottinghamshire County Council gave approval for the school following a meeting of the authority’s Planning and Rights of Way Committee.

Councillor Richard Butler, Chairman of the committee, said: “As we do with all planning applications, the committee took a very detailed look at these proposals for a new primary school in Bingham.

“We assessed there is a demand for more school places in Bingham, made even more pressing by the construction of new homes, and so it was appropriate to approve the application.

“Nevertheless, it was clear that a build-up of traffic and congestion from accessing the school must be avoided and measures will have to be taken to influence parent and child behaviour.

“We were also satisfied that ways other than just cars will be available for getting pupils to their classrooms with a nearby bus stop and a residential path from the new housing development to the school.

“The committee concluded that this school will help young people in an expanding town get an education without putting too much pressure on local infrastructure.”

No objection was raised by Bingham Town Council during the consultation period.

The anticipated opening date of the school will be September 2022, although this is dependent on construction not conflicting with house building on the new estate.
