BREAKING: Wilford Toll Bridge closed after historical bomb found in the Trent

Police have cordoned off the tram bridge.

A police cordon has been set up on Wilford Toll Bridge.

A bridge has been closed to the public after a suspected unexploded bomb was fished out of the River Trent.

The device, which is believed to have been in the water for many decades, was pulled from the river in Nottingham by an angler at around 4.20pm this afternoon.

Police were called to the Wilford Toll Bridge shortly afterwards and have now established a 50-metre cordon around the scene.

The bridge has been closed to trams and pedestrians and will remain shut until the device has been examined by expert bomb disposal officers.

Inspector John Lees, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Clearly in situations like this we have to put the safety of the public first and act out of an abundance of caution. Consequently we have taken the decision to close the bridge and establish a safety cordon while further investigations are carried out.”
