Burglar who left fingerprint at scene of crime jailed

A burglar who targeted four properties within a few hours has been jailed after police found a fingerprint at one of the crime scenes.

Forensics and CCTV footage linked Joel Paris to a series of burglaries, which took place on the morning of 21 September 2022 at homes in Hyson Green, Nottingham.

Paris, aged 23, of Radford Road, New Basford, was put behind bars for three years when he appeared at Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing on Thursday (9 February 2023).

He had earlier pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary of a dwelling, one of attempted burglary of a dwelling and one of burglary of a non-dwelling.

Paris first struck at an address in Brushfield Street, where he broke in through a kitchen window and stole medication between 5 am and 7 am on 21 September 2022.

A few doors away, he entered another home and took cash, bank cards and a rucksack full of school books, which were later found dumped in a nearby garden.

Paris then broke into a garage on nearby Gregory Boulevard and stole a bicycle, before attempting to break into another home on the same street through a window.

Detectives were able to forensically link Paris to the scene of the garage raid after he left a fingerprint on a wall. He was also identified from CCTV footage due to the distinctive trainers and a beanie hat he was wearing.

Detective Constable David Thornton, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “Burglaries are extremely unpleasant, invasive crimes and it is always good news to put an offender behind bars.

“We carried out a very thorough investigation which forensically linked Paris to the scene of one of his break-ins and CCTV also helped us to charge him with these four offences.

“This is exactly why the force has two teams of detectives, for both city and county, working exclusively on locking up burglars like Paris, preventing burglaries in the first place and supporting victims.”
