Celebrate culture and history with free entry for Heritage Open Days

England’s largest festival of history and culture, Heritage Open Days is back for 2025, from 12 – 21 September.

Presented by the National Trust, supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery and run by thousands of local organisations and volunteers, Heritage Open Days gives everyone the opportunity to enjoy free access to experiences and events across England.    

 

The festival brings people together to celebrate their heritage, community and history. Each year places across the country, including many National Trusts sites, throw open their doors to give people the chance to explore, see hidden places and try new experiences for free.

This year’s theme is Architecture, delving into the stories, history and impact of the buildings and structures around us.  

Here’s a round-up of the best National Trust events happening near you for Heritage Open Days: 

 

Clumber Park, Workshop, Nottinghamshire
As part of Heritage Open Days, Clumber Park is inviting visitors to enjoy the park free of charge on Friday 19 September. Aligning with this year’s theme of architecture, Nottingham University Manuscripts & Special Collections will be based in The Parsonage from 11.00 – 16.00 where they will display copied archive material including rare insights into the day to day lives of the Dukes of Newcastle and the running of Clumber Park estate.

Belton Estate, Grantham, Lincolnshire,

Belton’s Community Festival is back on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September, offering free entry to enjoy the full estate including the mansion, gardens, parkland and the National Trust’s largest outdoor adventure playground, alongside a celebration of the local community. The weekend will feature a variety of music, dance and circus performances; stalls from local makers and traders; displays from charities and community groups; food vendors and more. The festival is sponsored by BEONTVUK, Chef Abul, NT Leicester Association and Lincolnshire County Council and will also offer the chance to have a go at activities including a family-friendly butterfly survey and a programme of free walks around the estate and gardens. Hardwick & Stainsby Mill, Chesterfield, Derbyshire,  

Peel back the curtain on the architectural secrets of Hardwick Hall through specialist tours, try your hand at Elizabethan and historical crafts, and discover the hidden histories of Bess’s birthplace, the Old Hall all on Saturday 13 September.   

With so much to explore this Heritage Open Days come back again and again with free entry to Hardwick on 13–14 September and Stainsby Mill all weekend 12–14 September.

The Workhouse and Infirmary, Southwell, Nottinghamshire 
Behind every door is a story and The Workhouse and Infirmary bears witness to over 160 years of changing social policy and attitudes towards the poor and vulnerable in society. On Saturday 13 & Sunday 14 September enjoy free entry into the property.   

Tying in with this year’s theme of architecture, help build a scale model of the Infirmary, which will go on display once finished. Be part of the build and leave your mark for future visitors to see. Visitors can also enjoy building their very own architectural creations with Lego.

Gunby Estate, Hall and Gardens, Gunby, Spilsby, Lincolnshire 

Step into history and explore the charm of Gunby Estate, Hall and Gardens during Heritage Open Days on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September. This nationwide celebration of England’s rich heritage offers a rare opportunity to enjoy special places with free admission. Visitors can wander through the house, stroll the gardens, and discover the Orchard Gallery, all at no cost. A variety of local produce stalls will be set up across the site, offering something delicious and unique for everyone to enjoy. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply looking for a relaxing day out, Gunby offers the perfect setting to connect with the past and enjoy the present. Tattershall Castle, Sleaford Road, Tattershall, Lincolnshire 

On Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September, as part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days celebration, the castle opens its doors to all. From 10.30am to 4.30pm, visitors can explore the striking medieval architecture and uncover over 800 years of history. Once a proud symbol of power, later left to ruin, and now lovingly restored, Tattershall Castle stands as a testament to resilience and care. Whether you’re drawn by the grandeur of its great tower or the quiet charm of its moats and gardens, there’s something here for everyone. Families can enjoy a fun trail and hands-on activities, making it a perfect day out for all ages.

Grantham House, Grantham, Lincolnshire 

Newly opened urban oasis Grantham House offers free entry to enjoy its stunning walled garden, lawns and meadow throughout the year, as well as a café and second-hand bookshop within the walls of this medieval home. For Heritage Open Days, the National Trust will be offering brand new tours of the property, exploring its history and heritage and venturing into areas which are not usually open to the public. Additionally, visitors will be able to join tours of the beautiful gardens, led by one of the property’s expert gardening volunteers. Tours will be taking place on Sunday 21 September and can be booked now at nationaltrust.org.uk/Grantham.
