Officers have charged a 26-year-old man following an incident in Nottingham city centre.
Police said that the incident happened in Old Market Square just after 5pm on Friday 22 August.
A family were enjoying Nottingham Beach facilities in a confined outdoor seating area.
It was reported that a man, who does not know the family, assaulted their child.
Family members immediately intervened and a security team detained a suspect.
Officers arrived and swiftly arrested him.
Roshan Ramar, of Eastham Close, St Ann’s, Nottingham, has been charged with common assault. He was bailed and is due to appear before Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 12 September 2025.
Detective Sergeant Christophe Sutton, who is leading the investigation, said:
“We know this incident would have been distressing for the family, however together with local security we have immediately detained a man who will now be presented before the courts.
“Any incident which involves the assault of another is treated extremely seriously and the public can rightly expect a robust response from us.”
