Plans to refurbish a building in Nottingham city centre have been approved.
The Grade II listed building, in Angel Row, was once home to a Cardzone shop before it stopped trading.
The upper floors, including an attic workshop once thought to have been used for the lace trade, will now be converted into seven flats.
Five will have one bedroom, while the remaining two will feature two bedrooms.
A shop below them, which was also previously occupied by the Chameleon Arts Café which closed down in March 2024, will be given a spruce-up and let out for retail or café use.
“The building’s current state, particularly the vacant and deteriorating upper floors, represents a threat to its long-term preservation and fails to realise its potential contribution to the local area,” plans, submitted by P & C Property Rental Company Limited, say.
“The proposed works for all replacement and new windows represent a positive enhancement.

“They will preserve the authentic character and appearance of the property while introducing essential modern performance standards in acoustic insulation and thermal efficiency, thereby safeguarding the building’s significance and ensuring its comfort and utility for future generations.”
The proposed design of the shop front will be a “contemporary interpretation of a traditional shop front”, drawing direct inspiration from the historic data of the recently heritage-funded example next door in Angel Row.
According to historic data the basement of the building could also possibly feature a cave, documents also reveal.
