City crackdown on drink drivers yields results

It was a busy overnight shift for Radford Road response officers as they cracked down on suspected drink and drug drive offenders to keep Nottingham’s roads safe.

Whilst out on patrol on Saturday night (12 July), police acted on intelligence and pulled over a car on Wiverton Road, Forest Fields.

Once officers conducted a search of the vehicle and found what was suspected to be drug paraphernalia, the driver was asked to carry out a drugs test.

After the suspect provided a positive drugs wipe for cocaine and cannabis, the 48-year-old was arrested on suspicion of drug driving.

A further search of him uncovered cannabis, and he was also arrested on suspicion of possession of the Class B drug. He remains on bail as the investigation continues.

The team were then back out on the beat when they approached a van waiting at traffic lights on Radford Road, failing to move as the lights continuously turned from green through to red.

Officers pulled over the vehicle just after 2.45am on Sunday and conducted a roadside breath test. A man was arrested at the scene for being over the drink-drive limit.

Oliver Saint, of Forest Road, Annesley Woodhouse, has been charged with drink driving.

The 20-year-old was bailed and is due to appear at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on 1 August.

PC Dan Bird, of Nottinghamshire Police, said:

“Driving whilst under the influence of alcohol or drugs can have detrimental impacts for the driver as well as those around them.

“I want to remind people that if you suspect someone could be driving while under the influence, we’d ask you to call the police on 101. You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
