Free timers which help residents leave a light on and deter criminal activity are still available.
Nottinghamshire Police has partnered with Rushcliffe Borough Council on the project and is are encouraging residents in the area to collect and use the 24-hour timers.
The timers, which can be collected from a number of contact points in the area, allow them to set their lights to come on at specific times and reduce the number of hours their home is left in darkness.
If a house does not have any lights on, it is more likely to be targeted by burglars who could assume it is unoccupied.
Sergeant Sarah Merrall, from the Rushcliffe neighbourhood policing team, said: “Using a timer for your lights means your house looks busy and occupied when you’re away.
“Even though nights will be getting shorter in the coming months, these timers can help to keep your home from remaining in darkness for long periods of time.”
“As well as this, we would also ask people to ensure all outbuildings, sheds and garages are checked and always secured. Valuable items, particularly bikes should always be locked within a shed or garage and not left unsecured.“
Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment and Safety Councillor Rob Inglis said: “Using one of the free timers is a great way of deterring criminals and reducing the risk of crime for your property and in your neighbourhood.
“By leaving a light on in your home, you can help play your part to minimise criminal activity in your community during the darker winter months but also as an all year round deterrent. Remember to use LED light bulbs too when leaving a light on to be carbon clever in your home.”
