Mansfield District Council has confirmed that agreements have now been completed with both the leaseholder and freeholder of the Walkden Street site, bringing a long and complex process following the collapse of the multi-storey car park to a successful conclusion.
The completion of the agreements means the council has formally surrendered its lease on the site, removing future lease liabilities and responsibilities and paving the way for demolition work to begin.
The multi-storey car park suffered a partial collapse in August 2025 and was subsequently deemed unsafe. Since then, the council has worked closely with landowners, legal representatives and other partners to secure a long-term solution that protects public finances, prioritises safety and enables the site to move forward.
The agreement resolves the council’s position in relation to the site and allows demolition of the remaining structure to commence. Once complete, responsibility for the future redevelopment of the site will sit with the landowners. The council has appointed a contractor, and works are expected to commence in the next few weeks and take approximately 16 to 18 weeks to complete.
Businesses on Stockwell Gate will remain open and accessible throughout the demolition works, and the council is working closely with contractors and partners to minimise disruption wherever possible. The council has been in regular contact with the businesses to provide updates and support them during the closure.

“I am pleased that we have now reached a final agreement which provides certainty and allows this matter to be brought to a conclusion. It removes significant future liabilities for the council and enables demolition work to begin.
“I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in reaching this agreement, as well as local businesses and residents for their patience and understanding throughout what has been an exceptionally complex process.”

“The agreement means the council can move on from a situation that carried significant long-term financial risks while ensuring that a solution has been found for the site.
