Council leader calls for action over ‘decaying’ former Beeston pub

A council leader has slammed the condition of a former Beeston pub.

The Cricketers pub in Wollaton Road, Beeston, closed in 2024 after nearly six decades of serving the community.

It was put up for sale around August that year, with the site being acquired by the current owner in November 2024.

Kandore Properties submitted plans to Broxtowe Borough Council in August 2025 to demolish the pub and build six shops fronting onto Wollaton Road and Cross Street and 20 one-and two-bed apartments across three floors above the shops.

Locals have been concerned about the safety and security of the boarded-up pub, with borough council leader, Milan Radulovic (Brox Alliance), saying in December 2025 that his authority had been made aware of “a number of complaints”.

With the developer’s plans still undecided, the pub has been left decaying, and Councillor Radulovic says a Section 215 Notice could be served on the owners over its condition.

This type of notice can be served on the owners of land or buildings, requiring them to tidy up the area.

Cllr Radulovic said today: “I’m extremely concerned about the state of it… I’m going to formally request that the developers are served with the notice.

“The building is looking shoddy, disgusting, derelict and I’m getting frustrated as it’s detracted from all the good work that’s happening in [Beeston]… it detracts from the aesthetics of the town.”

The leader says the site has deteriorated “dramatically” of late and a decision over its demolition has yet to be confirmed.

The pub was subject to a suspected arson attack back in August 2025, where smoke could be seen pouring out of an upstairs window. Local businesses have previously described hearing an alarm sounding from the site in late 2025.

Cllr Radulovic previously said the owners could be issued with a community protection warning – a written warning issued by councils or police to address antisocial behaviour – if it was found the site’s safety and security were lacking

An agent speaking on behalf of the building’s owner says that the owner is “keen” to get the building and site cleared as soon as possible and is “aware of the problems”, but noted that demolition of the pub is dependent on the planning decision.

They said the main reason for the delay in determining the plans is “sorting out utility company infrastructure around the site”, which has now been completed.

A spokesperson for Broxtowe Borough Council said: “The council was awaiting further information from the applicant, which was submitted earlier this week.

“The council is now reviewing this information in advance of being able to issue a decision. The timing of the demolition is outside of the council’s control.

“No community protection warning has been issued for the site and the council has no logged complaints of anti-social behaviour.”

Kandore and its agent were contacted for comment.
