Council warning after sixth bin lorry fire caused by batteries

Nottingham City Council issues this warning after another bin lorry fire.

A spokesperson for Nottingham City Council said:

‘Last Friday, one of our recycling trucks had to dump its entire load onto Roden Street after a fire broke out inside the vehicle. The cause? A power bank that had been wrongly put in a household recycling bin.

‘This is the SIXTH fire inside a vehicle our Waste & Cleansing team has had to deal with this year – with another being caused by an e-scooter. Rechargeable items usually contain lithium batteries, which are quick to combust when crushed and mixed with paper and other flammable materials in the truck.

‘After seeing smoke coming from the back of the vehicle, our crew acted quickly – the material was emptied from the vehicle onto the road, and with help from the Fire & Rescue Service the source of the fire was found (a power bank) and put out before it could spread to the rest of the load.

‘Please remember:
– Never put electricals or batteries in any of your household bins
– Use a proper recycling point (search online to find your nearest)
– Or take them to the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Redfield Road.’
