Councillor’s anger at dumped mattresses left in Nottinghamshire town after Big Spring Clean

Councillor Samantha Deakin is angry after mattresses were dumped on Sutton-in-Ashfield streets.

Councillor Samantha Deakin said: ‘Enough is enough’ in response to more mattresses being dumped in Central Sutton and New Cross.

They were dumped just days after Ashfield’s Big Spring Clean finished.  The campaigning councillor couldn’t hide her frustration and anger.

She said: “For the last four weeks – thousands of residents have been taking advantage of free bulky waste collections.  Our Spring Clean this year has been hugely successful.  Despite COVID restrictions – our environment team are doing an excellent job.

“This is a real kick in the teeth for our waste disposal team.

“A team who ensured that Ashfield was the only council in Nottinghamshire to maintain a full bin collection service during the lockdown.”

The mattresses have now been moved by the Council’s waste disposal team.

The team are currently working through thousands of bulky waste requests from the Ashfield Big Spring Clean.

Councillor Deakin, who represents Sutton Central and New Cross for Ashfield Independents:

“This year, we have served over 90 fixed penalty notices in the Sutton Central and New Cross area alone.

“There is a small minority of people who don’t give two hoots about Sutton.

“We’re investigating whether these mattresses were dumped by a rogue landlord.

“I’ve asked the Council to look at available CCTV to try and catch the culprits.  I getting a bit sick and tired of the continual dumping.  There’s plenty of people in the New Cross area who have pride in our area.  We are being let-down by a small minority of residents who couldn’t give a toss.  If we find any evidence of people who fly tip – we will have no hesitation in ensuring the offender receives the harshest penalty.”
