Police are appealing for witnesses after a visitor to Newark was attacked and left with a fractured jaw.
Officers are appealing for the public’s help in locating a group of youngsters believed to be responsible for the attack on Thursday 13 July just after 7 pm.
A 38-year-old man was sitting on a bench with his girlfriend in Castle Gate, Newark, near the Swan and Salmon pub when he was approached by a group of teenagers.
When the couple left, they were then ambushed near Riverside Park and struck twice in the face by two members of the group.
Nothing was taken.
The victim was sent to Queen’s Medical Centre where he was treated for a fractured jaw.
Officers are following a number of lines of inquiry including carrying out extensive CCTV inquiries.
It is believed there were up to six in the group with the main instigator described as around 15 years old wearing black joggers and a black jumper.
Detective Sergeant Andrea Brown, who is investigating the incident, said: “The couple had come to Newark to visit the Castle grounds and spend a nice day in the town.
“This was cut short due to a nasty and unprovoked assault by a group of youngsters.
“This is a joint investigation with the Neighbourhood Policing Team and CID and we are determined to catch those responsible. We will not tolerate this violent behaviour in Newark.
“We would also like to appeal to members of the public. Have you seen this group? Did you witness the assault? Were you also approached by the group that day? Have you any information that could help us with our investigation?”
