The number of registered deaths in England and Wales that mentioned novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the week ending 28 January 2022 has dropped.
Of the 12,401 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending 28 January 2022 (Week 4), 1,385 mentioned “novel coronavirus (COVID-19).”
This is a decrease on the previous week (Week 3), in which 1,484 deaths were registered, and makes up 11.6% of all deaths in Week 4.
The number of deaths involving COVID-19 in England decreased to 1,323 in Week 4, compared with 1,378 in Week 3. In Wales, deaths involving COVID-19 decreased to 60 in Week 4, compared with 102 in Week 3.
Of the 1,385 deaths involving COVID-19 in England and Wales, 71.2% (986 deaths) had this recorded as the underlying cause of death in Week 4, compared with 72.9% in Week 3.
