The Prime Minister Boris Johnson held a press briefing from Downing Street today 4 January.
Boris Johnson is joined by Sir Patrick Vallance and Sir Chris Whitty.
Key points:
• Boris Johnson opens the press conference saying more than 200,000 new Covid cases been recorded.
He says anyone who thinks this is over is “profoundly wrong”. He says we need to proceed with “utmost caution”.
• Johnson says that from 10 January 100,000 key workers will be prioritised for testing. They will be asked to do lateral flow tests every day. From 10 January lateral flow testing kits will be supplied daily to over 100,000 workers.
• Tomorrow he will recommend to cabinet that they carry on with plan B, he said.
• He urges people to get a booster jab as soon as possible.
• He said that every eligible adult was offered a jab before the end of December 2021.
• He says stick with Plan B – get a test before an event where you meet people you don’t normally meet, don’t take unnecessary risks with elderly people. He said he wants a mixture of Plan B and a greatly accelerated vaccination ( and booster ) programme – he says he thinks these are the best balance of precautions given the available data.
