Covid: Hospitalisations up 37% week on week as cases surge in England

Figures released today 22 December show increases in deaths, cases and hospitalisations.

Between 14 December 2022 and 20 December 2022, there have been 366,093 tests. This shows an increase of 10.8% compared to the previous 7 days.

Cases in England

A confirmed case is someone who has tested positive for coronavirus.

Between 11 December 2022 and 17 December 2022, 36,963 people had a confirmed positive test result. This shows an increase of 28.8% compared to the previous 7 days.

Vaccinations in England

Vaccines are given in several doses.

45,374,671 people had been given a first dose by the end of 18 December 2022.

42,878,848 people had been given a second dose by the end of 18 December 2022.

33,854,240 people had been given a booster or third dose by the end of 18 December 2022.

Healthcare in England

Some people with coronavirus have to go into hospital.

Between 13 December 2022 and 19 December 2022, 7,158 went into hospital with coronavirus. This shows an increase of 36.3% compared to the previous 7 days.

There were 8,643 patients in hospital with coronavirus on 21 December 2022.

Some people in the hospital need to use a special device called a mechanical ventilator to help them breathe.

There were 174 coronavirus patients in hospital beds with a mechanical ventilator on 21 December 2022.

Deaths in England

Between 11 December 2022 and 17 December 2022, there have been 508 deaths within 28 days of a positive coronavirus test. This shows an increase of 1.6% compared to the previous 7 days.
