Cyclist in hospital after Collingham assault

Officers investigating a ‘vicious’ assault on a 61-year-old man are appealing for witnesses including two women who witnessed it.

The victim was riding his bike along Snowdon Road in Collingham on Friday 20 June at around 11.30pm when the incident occurred.

As he approached the road, he noticed two young men shouting sexual comments at two women. As he passed, the men told him to remain on his bike or get beaten up.

The next thing he remembers is being knocked to the ground.

The victim was sent to hospital with severe bruising and swelling to his eye and ribs.

Officers are carrying out a number of lines of inquiry to track down those responsible including forensics and CCTV work.

They are now appealing for witnesses to come forward including the two women who witnessed the assault.

PC Lydia Garnham-Davies, who is investigating the incident, said:

“This was a vicious assault on a 61-year-old man who was just riding home after visiting his relative.

“We are determined to catch those responsible and are appealing for the public’s help especially the two young women who witnessed the assault.

“We believe they may have vital information that could help us progress our investigation.”
