The land is being developed for housing.
The demolition teams began breaking up the pump house at the former Abbey Road Depot site this morning.
The plans were passed on 18th June for the demolition of existing buildings, and a residential development with associated landscaping, infrastructure and access points from Abbey Road and Buckfast Way (outline with all matters reserved except access).
As part of Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Local Plan Part 2 – up to 50 new homes will be built on the council site on Abbey Road in West Bridgford.
Local residents raised a petition which achieved 675 signatures – and contacted their local MP in a bid to save the structure from demolition.
Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Executive Manager for Transformation Leanne Ashmore said: “As part of the Council’s long held ambition to bring this site forward for housing, outline planning permission for the former Abbey Road depot was secured on June 13, 2019. The first phase of these works has now started as scheduled and is adhering to Public Health England guidelines on construction sites during COVID-19.
“This scheme of over 70 new homes will deliver exceptional, energy efficient housing for the Borough, with 30% being affordable. These homes will be of high-quality design and materials and will also meet central Government’s no fossil fuels in new homes policy.
“We are aware of local interest in the former pump station but it was not possible to retain the building as part of our ambition for the site to provide a better landscape and homes for future generations. We have undertaken a comprehensive photographic survey of the property and this record will be made available to the public in due course.”
