Devil’s Bend closed as ancient wall collapses for third time

Town Street in Bramcote locally known as Devil’s Bend was shut to traffic on Wednesday evening.

Council highways engineers were scheduled to inspect the site on Thursday to assess the damag, aiming to reopen the road with temporary traffic signals by Friday.

This incident follows significant disruption last spring and summer caused by the collapse of a different part of the wall.

Part of the wall, which is several metres tall, also fell down in 2021.

A highways manager explained that recent weather conditions, combined with the erosion of the sandstone wall, contributed to the collapse of a newly affected section near the area repaired in 2024.

The manager said: “Engineers are visiting the site today to assess the damage and develop a plan for repairs. We aim to reopen the road tomorrow with temporary traffic signals in place. Residents and road users will be kept informed of any updates and repair plans.”

Nottinghamshire County Council said:

‘Unfortunately, Town Street in Bramcote has been closed due to a collapsed wall. Please avoid the area for your safety. Further updates will be provided.’
