Dispersal order in place for 48 hours after 30 youths gather in Newark town centre

It follows on from dispersal orders put in place last weekend which made a significant impact following antisocial behaviour around bonfire night.

A 48-hour dispersal order has been put in place following reports of 30 youths in Newark Market Place causing antisocial behaviour.

The town council have stated that this week they have found ramps made out of market stall boards, barriers pushed over, a lock stolen, scaffolding protection scattered over the walkway and lights pulled down.

The dispersal order came into effect at 3pm today (Friday 13 November) and gives police and community support officers the power to move people on and arrest those who aren’t compliant. They will also be issuing hefty fines to anyone who is not sticking to the Covid-19 restrictions.

It follows on from dispersal orders put in place last weekend which made a significant impact following antisocial behaviour around bonfire night.

Heather Sutton, district commander for Newark and Sherwoood, said: “We’re taking a robust approach towards anyone loitering in the market place.

“The incidents this week have caused upset to council staff and other members of the public, who also tell us that youths have been abusive when they’ve been challenged.

“We won’t tolerate this behaviour and will work with our partners to monitor the situation over the weekend and ensure anyone causing trouble is dealt with.”
